Oil, gas and mining are an important practice area of our boutique firm, which uniquely combines commercial acumen, financial modeling and innovative legal solutions. We assist the contractors, commercial departments of natural resource companies as well as regulatory bodies build new investment decision models or help fine-tune the existing models by incorporating legal and non-legal risk. Our experience in drafting, reviewing and negotiating sector specific contracts give a particular insight into where the risks may lie.
Dr. Emre Usenmez is a petroleum economist and a legal expert in the natural resources sector. He has significant experience working with the staff of national ministries around the world, and with the oil and mining companies. He has chaired, moderated and spoke at numerous natural resources conferences focusing on legal and investment issues, and has given a TEDx talk on crude oil pricing. He has written a number of books, chapters, and articles on oil and gas law and resource taxation.
Prior to joining the Aber Group, Emre was a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Finance at the University of Aberdeen's AFG College and a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Aberdeen's Law School. Until August 2018 he also served as Dean for Internationalization focusing on China and East Asia. He is an associate at the Aberdeen Energy Institute and Aberdeen University Centre for Energy Law (AUCEL). Between 2005 and 2007 he also worked in the natural resources sector in Azerbaijan.
He holds a Ph.D. in Economics, Finance and Law, an MSc in Petroleum, Energy Economics and Finance, and an LLM in Oil and Gas Law from the University of Aberdeen. He also holds a BSc in Economics and a BA in Political Science from North Carolina State University.
